Differences between a regular fablab, a supernode and a mini fablab

Hello,

I’m new to this community and I’ve just realized that Labs are classified in the following categories:

  1. Regular fablab
  2. Mini fablab
  3. Supernode

However, I haven’t been able to find any description on those categories, nor in the form for creating a new fablab nor in this discuss instance (the most similar question is this one).

If I’m not wrong, and according to this site http://www.minifablab.nl/small-fablab-suite-the-10k-fablab/, a mini fablab is a fablab that “just” costs between 10,000$ and 15,000$.

If that’s true, I guess a Supernode may have to do with the amount of investment needed, but haven’t found anything about it.

Can anyone guide me with this, please?

You are correct about Mini Fab Labs. Normal Fab Labs should be with an investment of around 10 times a Mini Fab Lab.

Supernodes are Fab Lab with a longer history and experience, and participation in the Fab Academy has always been a key element in this. However, this aspect has never been very structured in Fablabs.io (there is also an important bug), but in any case we are in the process of removing them since in the discussions at FAB13 this was considered not relevant any longer. The Supernode status will be removed soon.

Regarding categorization of Labs, you can also check these notes / discussion about potential future development: https://github.com/fablabbcn/fablabs/issues/108

Thank you very much for the explanation, Massimo.

I read the github issue and I found the new categorization proposal very itneresting and more consistent. It is not clear, though, when is this change going to happen. Are you working on a specific schedule in mind?

Regards.

I dont understand why did I get this email asking me quistions? I dont work for Fab Lads Im just a member!

Have you subscribed to alerts in the Labs section of the forum? You would get email alerts for all the posts

The plans changed twice last year, but soon we will organize everything with Milestones in GitHub. We just had two days meeting about this, more news soon!
