Urgent 6-month fab adademy instructor needed in brighton, uk

The University of Brighton’s School of Media urgently seeks a qualified Fab Academy Instructor for a new Fab Lab situated on its Moulsecoomb campus in Brighton, UK, to start immediately for a 6-month post with potential for a permanent appointment as the Fab Lab technical manager. The initial contract is from Jan – June 2018 part-time (0.6 FTE) at a salary of £29,799 pro rata (~£1490/mo for a maximum of 6 months), plus tuition waiver for any MA degree offered by the School of Media.
The School of Media at the University of Brighton in Brighton, UK, offers an innovative, international environment combined with first-rate teaching in interdisciplinary Bachelor and Master’s degree courses. It is strong in conducting research in disciplines such as art, product design, architecture, media technology (particularly Digital Music and Sound Art), engineering, computer science, natural sciences and social sciences. The University of Brighton Fab Lab is physically situated amongst advanced product design, heavy engineering, and electrical engineering labs.

The southern UK, with its attractive countryside and mild weather is in the direct vicinity of London, while at the same time having its own identity, rich history and arts focus, with several university campuses easily accessible from all over the world via four main airports of London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London City, and London Stansted.

We are a brand new lab, operating our first year as a Fab Academy node – currently, the only node in the United Kingdom. The University of Brighton Fab Lab will not open its doors to the entire campus or wider public until September, 2017, so this first Fab Academy will be a small, hand-picked class with few other demands on the Fab Lab machines or facilities during course time. We aim eventually to provide services to children (especially, girls), students, entrepreneurs and companies that deal with modern production technologies and want to encourage our users to open up new fields of applications.

The instructor will:

  • Instruct Fab Academy 2017 (Jan - June 2017) and teach ~10-20 users how to operate Fab Lab equipment (e.g. 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC milling, vinyl cutting, etc.)
  • Support the organization and management of the Fab Lab’s daily operations
  • Provide technical and practical support of Fab Academy projects
  • Organize and implement the Fab Academy curriculum
  • Plan, organize and conduct workshops on various topics
  • Collaborate with other Fab Labs to develop and improve technologies and processes
  • Assist with public relations and publicity

Ideal candidate profile:

  • Graduate of the Fab Academy with diploma qualifying instruction
  • Able to work independently and in a structured manner and have the ability to quickly familiarise with new fields of work
  • Able to demonstrate excellent organizational and communication skills and a strong team spirit
  • Strong expertise in one of the primary elements of the Fab Academy curriculum (e.g. programming, circuit design, 2D/3D construction, textiles, design, etc.)
  • Confident with mechanical operations, repair, and maintenance
  • Excellent and fluid knowledge of English.

Additional desired qualities

  • Holds a university degree in architecture, art, engineering (especially computer science, electrical engineering.), industrial design, design or a similar discipline with a clear reference to the activities in a Fab Lab
  • Has previous experience in working on independent projects at a FabLab, Hacker Space, TechShop, etc.
  • Has particular experience or interest in media technology, music/sound art, AR/VR/XR and/or wearable technology

The position is part-time, 3 days per week. The instructor will be encouraged to study part time or spend the other two days a week pursuing independent projects in the lab and surrounding areas.
